Yesterday, the Girls’ 1st XI Hockey team won the tier 4 South West Regional tournament, and qualified for the National Finals – a historic achievement for QEH.

We dominated the pool stage, beating both Wycliffe and Clayesmore 1-0, and drawing with Exeter and Truro in the 15 minute matches. We came top of our pool and achieved the most points of all the teams competing during this stage.

In the quarter finals we won our match convincingly against Richard Huish on penalty shuffles. Three Year 12s, Rosie M, Daisy H and Lucy B, all stepped up to take the shuffles and smashed it, with all three scoring. Izzy Coombs showed unbelievable skill in saving all her shuffles so we only had to take three of the five prepared, as we had already won.

We won the semi final match against Truro on an impressive penalty flick scored by Lucy R, and went on to the regional final against KLB. An early goal from Lucy B and great defending of short corners meant that we won the Regional Final, and will go on to play in the National Finals in Spring 2022.

This is a monumental win and an absolutely excellent team effort, so the whole squad should be extremely proud. A special mention goes to our player of the match, Izzy Coombs. She was an absolute pillar on the team and, because of her, we didn’t concede a single goal all day.
