Igniting Minds: Catalyst Scholars Explore Reading, Art, and Engineering

The QEH Catalyst Programme offers tailored enrichment for high-achieving pupils, combining advanced reading, creative thinking, and STEM innovation to inspire academic excellence and real-world skills.

The QEH Catalyst Programme provides tailored enrichment for pupils through two strands: the Scholars Programme for the top ten percent of each year group, and the Gifted and Talented Programme for the following ten percent. Designed to stretch and inspire, the programme supports pupils as they grow through the school. This term, pupils have explored the power of reading, the value of creative thinking, and the science of vehicle design and efficiency.

At the start of term, Year 7 and 8 Catalyst pupils were introduced to their bespoke reading programme. In a session led by the school librarian, they discussed how reading can shape our understanding of ourselves and others. Books were explored as mirrors, reflecting personal identity, and as windows, offering insight into different lives and cultures. As the Librarian noted: “Understanding where we fit in the world is invaluable to our wellbeing.”

Year 8 Scholars then took part in a creative day at Squareworks, focused on creativity and innovation. Pupils explored what creativity means, how it occurs, and how it can appear in many areas, from sport and music to social settings and strategic thinking. They considered how to develop both convergent and divergent thinking, balancing logic with imagination.

The visit ended with a trip to the Open Exhibition at the Royal West of England Academy (RWA), where pupils were inspired by a range of innovative artworks across painting, sculpture, photography, mixed media, and architecture. The exhibition challenged them to think differently and appreciate how art can provoke new ideas.

Next up, Year 9 Catalyst and Scholars pupils took part in an exciting STEM Kart Day, linking science, technology, engineering and mathematics with real-world, sustainable innovation. Developed by Big Bang Experiences, the programme focuses on clean transport and green technology, showing how STEM can address climate issues. The day began with a workshop on ergonomics and anthropometrics, using Formula One steering wheels to explore how design can improve comfort and performance. Pupils applied mathematical and scientific principles to consider how engineering must adapt to human needs. At Failand, pupils tested their knowledge on an inflatable electric go-kart track. Through timed laps and observation, they examined how aerodynamics and design affect performance. Workbooks supported data collection and analysis, helping pupils understand how engineers refine ideas through testing. In the final classroom session, pupils explored forces and aerodynamics further and designed their own go-karts with a focus on efficiency, speed, and sustainability.

The day was a fantastic blend of learning and fun, filled with experimentation, enthusiasm, and even a few friendly lap-time competitions.

QEH’s annual Lizzies Awards celebrated pupil creativity with an inspiring showcase of short films based on the themes ‘Three Wishes’ and ‘Myths’.

You run a remarkable school with an ethic that is truly unique. It shines through in each and every boy. There’s something in the way the teachers know every boy’s talent and in the way the boys support each other (while also embracing real competition!) that’s just remarkable.
